If you have heard of some of the old wives tales pregnancy tests then you would understand that Pregnancy tests are nothing less than a magic. You pee on a strip and the color of the line changes confirming that there is a baby inside. No matter what kind of test is performed every test detects the one and only hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) also known as pregnancy hormone. This hormone is present in every woman but at a very low level, it is only after pregnancy it rises above a particular level so that it conforms that the woman is pregnant and for it to appear at a certain level it takes 14 days from the date of ovulation or from the date of fertilization. Since ancient times people have devised their own ways to perform these at home through various home-based and other Orthodox remedies and it was only in the 1970s when over the counter kits became available for everyone. However before the invention of this device either one used to just wait and see or she used to perform some of these methods. These methods might seem unusual and hilarious to you but these were some of the most reliable methods used to test pregnancy during those days.
Onion test for pregnancy
Apart from the Egyptians, Ancient Greeks were also believed to be the Lord of medical science during those days. It was a test something similar to like when we are trying to find that which road has the most traffic and which has less. Although the test is known as onion test but it was advised and preached that any woman who is pregnant should insert a smelly vegetable inside her vagina and if in the morning her mouth has the same smell than it means that she was not pregnant.
The theory supporting this test was, that because the woman stomach does not contain any baby hence her stomach is empty so the smell easily traverses from her vagina to her mouth through her body which implies she is not Pregnant. Experts told that If in case she would have been pregnant than her stomach would be filled with baby and the smell will not be able to travel from her vagina to the mouth.
Wheat and barley pregnancy test
This test was devised by ancient Egyptians in 1350 B.C.E. and not only just the test for pregnancy this test was also used to confirm the gender of the unborn baby as well. In this test, the woman was made to urinate over wheat and barley seeds for several days daily or at regular intervals. If the wheat got sprouted then it was considered that she will give birth to a girl but if in case the barley got sprouted than it meant that it would be a boy and if in case nothing sprouted than it means that she's not pregnant.
The best part about this test was that later it was scientifically researched and proved to be true although that research only proved the half of its part and that was pregnancy test and not the gender confirmation. What happened in 1963 was, a scientist performed this test several times in a lab and came to a conclusion that 70% of the time if the woman was pregnant than the seeds would get sprouted. This test was not only performed by using the urine of the pregnant woman but also the urine of the better half. Although this test could not confirm the gender part but yes it confirmed that it worked for testing pregnancy.
The latch test for pregnancy
This test dates back to the 15th century about which is also written in the distaff Gospels which is a collection of the woman\'s medical lore. The document titled as "Advice Concerning Pregnancy and Health in Late Medieval Europe: Peasant Women’s Wisdom in The Distaff Gospels\" could be found here . The test says that if you want to test a woman for pregnancy then make her pee in a basin and then put a latch inside that. Allow it to remain there for at least 3 to 4 hours and after that remove the urine and the latch from there. If in case you see any kind of impression of the latch on the basin than it means that the woman was pregnant otherwise not.
Look into my eyes pregnancy test
This test was invented by a physician named Jacques Guillemeau in the 16th century who was also the author of an influential treatise on ophthalmology. He claimed that if a woman is pregnant than she would have drooping lids, swollen veins in the corner of the eye and deep set eyes with small pupils. This test was not devised to detect early pregnancy and can only be performed in the second month of pregnancy. Although there is no scientific support for this test but this test brought one benefit to the society and that is the evidence of changes in eyes during pregnancy. Yes, eyes do change during pregnancy it is a symptom of pregnancy that affects your vision that is why medical professionals do not recommend to get a new pair of glasses during pregnancy because that is a temporary change and would not stay longer.
Piss Prophets Test
Now, this test was not only for just pregnancy but it was also used for detecting another kind of diseases. In the 16th century, some European prophets claimed that they can determine whether a woman is pregnant or not by inspecting her urine. Not only did they just checked for the color and characteristics of the urine but also they would mix that with alcohol for better study of the symptoms. These self-proclaimed experts used to diagnose a lot of different diseases by monitoring the urine of both man and woman. Although some medical professionals confirm that this test might be true to some extent because the alcohol would show some reaction when mixed with the urine of a pregnant lady due to the presence of hCG hormones.
The Frog pregnancy Test
In 1940s several frog testing labs got opened throughout the world and thousands of frogs were exported everywhere. The Dr. would collect the urine of the woman and would send it to the frog lab for testing. The technician at the lab will inject the urine into the hind leg of the female frog and would leave it for a night into the tank. In the morning if he found any kind of eggs than it confirmed that the lady was pregnant. It was believed that the female frog got ovulated due to the presence of pregnancy hormones in the urine. Later on when over-the-counter kits were designed these labs got shut down and all the frogs were thrown back into the wild.
There is also a theory which states that these frogs contain a particular kind of fungi which is responsible for killing 200 different type of species worldwide and people say that these frogs are taking the revenge because they were used for this stupid test.
The rabbit test
This test was similar to the frog test but here the rabbit was killed after performing the test. Although this test is commonly known as the Rabbit died test but actually the rabbit used to die in all test irrespective of the fact whether a woman is pregnant or not.
Here also the urine was injected inside the rabbit in a lab and after a couple of hours, it was cut opened to see any changes in its ovaries. The same test was performed on mice and rats as well. Two German scientist named Selmar Aschheim and Bernhard Zondek invented this test, however, they didn\'t know the name of the hormone but they knew that there was a hormone which gets produced in a pregnant lady and due to that hormone the ovaries of these animals would get infected. So if in case any change or development in the ovaries were found than it meant that the woman was pregnant.
Although these tests might seem horrible and laughable to you but actually gradually these tests became the basis of the modern day\'s test and slowly the researchers improved upon these test and that is a why we now have even Bluetooth enabled test as well.
Have you heard of any other strange pregnancy tests? Hope we didn't turn you off vegetables.
