Pregnancy is a natural phenomenon that happens after the fertilization of the egg cell of the mother and the sperm cell of the father. This is often called as conception. The process will produce a zygote and this zygote will continue to grow and produce new cells. Specific female hormones are activated to produce substances that are only present in a pregnant woman. These substances will continue to be found in the mother’s urine and blood until the end of pregnancy.
There are different types of test to detect pregnancy. Some will only detect but not confirm. There are only two general types of pregnancy exams, the hospital or laboratory based and the home based exam.
The home based pregnancy exam is the most popular type, because it is handy and readily available. It can be purchased in the drugstores. It can give quick result. But these results must be confirmed by the doctor. The Digital urine pregnancy test is a popular exam performed at home. It gives quick results. Test strips are dipped into the urine. The test strip is sensitive to the presence of HCG. To perform this test, the first urine sample must be obtained. The collection container of the urine must be clean and dry to avoid its contamination. The test strip must be brought in a room temperature. Instructions given must I red properly on how to see the results. Inpregcolor card or Pregtest card, and Veklocit test, a urine sample must be collected in a clean and dry container. Two to three drops of urine is dropped in S form on the test card. The test strip has T and C band. Wait more 3 to 5 minutes until the result will appear. A purple or red color on the T band yields a positive result and the presence of more HCG in the urine. The light pink color on the T band means that there is only a poor amount of HCG in the urine. Yet there are certain instances wherein there is a false result. The test must be performed repeatedly to yield a good result.
The Hospital and laboratory pregnancy exam include the urine, blood, and ultrasonography test. The blood test is the most accurate pregnancy test and most sensitive pregnancy test. The rosette inhibition assay is a type of blood test that can detect pregnancy after 48 hours of fertilization. It is the first response early result pregnancy test. The blood test is sensitive to the presence of the HCG. The only way for the woman to attain this test is to go to the hospital and the medical technician will obtain a blood sample from her through puncture in the skin. It will give results after few hours.
The HCG urine test only needs midstream sample urine collected in a clean and dry container. This specimen is submitted at the laboratory and results will be given after one to two hours. This type of test is also accurate second to the blood test.
Indications to perform a pregnancy test
The best time to perform a pregnancy test is on the first week after the woman has missed her periods. A home pregnancy kit can be used and is very handy. This type of test may read false result, because of some technical mistakes. There are some situations wherein a pregnancy test can have false reading and must need further tests to confirm it. The blood test is the only best pregnancy test for early detection.
Pregnancy detection is easy to perform, but its confirmation is not that accurate. Performing early pregnancy exam can cause false result. There are situations wherein a false reading of pregnancy is obtained and the woman will believe that she is actually pregnant. Some disease can also produce elevated amounts of HCG found in blood and urine. The presence of liver cancer, choriocarcinoma, and germ cell tumours also mark the presence of increased HCG levels.
In ectopic pregnancy, the fertilized egg cell is dislodged outside the womb. It is implanted either in the first one third of the fallopian tube or even at the near organs outside the uterus. The gestational trophoblastic disease is a disorder that has same manifestations to a real pregnant woman. An example is H-mole (Hydatidiform mole). During the first trimester of pregnancy, the woman experiences delay in menstruation and some nausea, vomiting, and dizziness also found in a woman with H-mole. H-mole disease is also a product of the fertilization of the sperm cell and egg cell. Yet one of the germ cells has a defect in the amount of chromosomes it is expected to contain. During the first trimester, the pregnancy reading is positive. But during the second trimester, the pregnancy reading is already false. The H-mole is a parasite not a fetus that grows inside a woman’s womb. It also consumes nutrients just like a fetus but is not alive. The woman’s uterus enlarges but there is no living fetus inside. Consistent tests must be performed until the fourth month in order to have a confirmation true pregnancy. It is important for a suspected pregnant woman to have monthly consultation to monitor her pregnancy.
Pregnancy is a blessing and a natural phenomenon that occurs in all human beings and animals. It is the only way of procreation and reproduction wherein the female conceives a new being. The new being will grow into adulthood and will soon reproduce and continue the existence of life.
